The Bolshoi Ballet’s 2016 to 17 season will include a celebration of Yuri Grigorivich and plans for a new ballet about Rudolf Nureyev.
Provisionally titled Nureyev, this work will have choreography by Yuri Possokhov, working with composer Ilya Demutsky and director and set designer Kirill Serebrennikov – the same team who worked on Possokhov’s A Hero of Our Time, which recently won the Golden Mask award for best ballet performance. Possokhov and Serebrennikov are co-creating the libretto for the ballet.
Grigorovich, choreographer and former director of the Bolshoi Ballet, has his 90th birthday in January 2017. Several events paying tribute to him are planned for January and February, with a festival of his ballets. This will include a revival of his The Golden Age, to be performed on the Bolshoi’s New Stage, and Grigorovich’s version of Raymonda, on the larger Historic Stage.
The season will also include the company’s first performances of Harald Lander’s virtuoso display piece Etudes, scheduled for March.
